Introducing orchidmedia Server

Previous pageReturn to chapter overviewNext page

There are two parts to orchidmedia, the orchidmedia Server, and the orchidmedia Desktop Companion.

The orchimedia Server provides all the methods to store your media information and files. The orchidmedia Desktop Companion provides all the visual features you see in the software. We have separated these two parts in the software, so that orchidmedia Server can link with other computers, which are running on a network or on the internet, and to speed up the process of retrieving and providing vast amounts of information.

When you clicked on the orchimedia icon on your desktop or via the Start orchidmedia server control, orchidmedia Server starts first. When the Server starts, it will normally show as an icon on the Windows taskbar.

The Server Window displays as shown below:-

1. Server Name and Current State display the unique name that you give to your orchidmedia Server, and whether the Server is running or not.

2. Help button - you can click this at any time to display help and advice on orchidmedia Server.

3. Exit button - if you click this button, and the Current State of the Server is running, then it will hide the Server on the Windows taskbar, however, if you have pressed the Stop Server link (7), you can close and exit the Server by pressing the Exit button.

4. Installed Version - displays the current version of orchidmedia installed on the computer.

5. Local Server Settings - if you click this link, and the Current State of the Server is running, then it will stop the Server, and display the Local Server Settings. Here you can alter the settings of the Server (see Configuring orchidmedia Server).

6. Software Updates - Schedule automatic software updates, and maintain orchidmedia software using the options displayed below software updates.  The current schedule for updates is shown to the right below the installed version.

7. Start orchidmedia - orchidmedia Server normally starts itself automatically, but you can manually start the server by pressing this button. The orchidmedia Desktop Companion will start as soon as the Server has started.

8. Stop Server - you need to click on the Stop Server link to stop the Server before you can exit and close orchidmedia altogether, otherwise the Server can continue to run in background, perhaps to provide connections to other computers.

NOTE: If this is the first time that you have started the software, orchidmedia Server needs to know a few things, before it will start the orchidmedia Client, so read Configuring orchidmedia Server, to see what you need to do next.
