Local Server Settings

On the previous page, Introducing orchidmedia Server, you read about the Local Server Settings link  (5) on the Server Window display. If this is the first time, you have started orchidmedia, you will see that the orchidmedia Local Server Settings have automatically displayed in the Server window to the left of this help window. Here is a description of the local Server settings:-

ServerPrefBlank1

1. Media Server Name - you must provide a Media Server Name for the Server to operate. If this is the first time that you have started orchidmedia, then the Media Server name provided will be your computer's machine name. You can change this to a name that means something to you. This name can be changed at any time in the future, but you must have a media name to start the software.

2. Remote Access Option - set this option to allow other orchidmedia Desktop Companions to see this server on a local area network using the TCP/IP Address selected below.  This required if you intend to use this copy of the server to store and retrieve information for remote players. If you do not turn this option on, the server will only store and retrieve information for the player on this computer.

3. Local TCP/IP Address to use- the local TCP/IP address will be automatically filled by orchidmedia, and in most cases, you can leave it to it's current settings. This address is the current primary address that identifies your computer to other local area networked computers. You should only change this if you have more than one network connection, and therefore more than one way to access the internet or your local area network. An example would be a wireless network connection and a cable connection to the same network. In this case, you can set this address using the drop-down list to one or all of your network connections, and orchidmedia will use this address to stream media to other orchidmedia Desktop Companions.

4. Local storage folder - you must provide a valid folder path for the local storage folder. The Server will store all you media information under the folder path defined here. Folder paths are defined in the format [ Drive Letter :\folder_name\sub_folder_name\etc ] (e.g. C:\orchidmedia)

5. Browse button - alternatively, you can locate an existing folder using the Browse button, this button displays all the current folders on your computer. Select a folder, which will provide enough space for your media information. TIP: If you have more than one Disk Drive on the computer, avoid using the C Drive, where the Windows operating system is located. If you intend to store Music and Video content, then you can expect to use a large amount of computer disk space.

6. Cancel button - at any time, you can exit the preference window without saving any changes using the Cancel button. The (x) Exit Button will also close the window without saving changes.

7. Save button - if you click this button, then so long as you have provided a Media Server Name, and a valid local storage folder, your Server preferences will be saved permanently.
